Hasbro has pulled the plug on a new Dungeons & Dragons game from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen. Bloomberg reported the cancellation today after receiving confirmation from both Hasbro and developer Giant Skull.
“While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship,” a spokesperson told Bloomberg.
Despite this, Giant Skull remains operational with Asmussen saying that "things are good at Giant Skull." Asmussen noted that he enjoyed his time with Hasbro subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast, and is looking at opportunities to work with them again or with other publishers. Giant Skull's Dungeons & Dragons game was announced last June , making the cancellation a bit of a surprise. Details are scarce on the project, but it was set to be an action/adventure title in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, with both parties calling it “a definitive moment in both companies’ gaming ambitions.”
The reasons for the cancellation remain unclear but, hopefully, Giant Skull will bounce back with another exciting project. As for Wizards of the Coast, it's preparing to release the long-awaited sci-fi game, Exodus, in 2027 . It's expected to be one of the more notable releases of next year.
Asmussen left Respawn Entertainment back in 2023 after shipping two successful single-player Star Wars games. Many assumed he'd return to helm the third Star Wars Jedi game, but Asmussen had other aspirations. The director has made a name for himself in the action/adventure genre, as he worked on the original God of War trilogy. He began his time on the series as an artist, eventually graduating to creative director on the third game.
In 2014, he left Sony Santa Monica to join Respawn as game director on the Star Wars Jedi series, creating two of the most successful Star Wars games since Disney acquired the IP. A third Star Wars Jedi game is in the works , but little is known about the project. Some fans speculate it could be revealed next year for a 2027 release, but nothing has been confirmed.
