Star Trek 60th Anniversary Special
This September marks the 60th anniversary of Star Trek . As part of a year-long celebration of the beloved sci-fi series, Paramount and IDW have announced Star Trek: The 60th Anniversary Special, an oversized one-shot comic book arriving later this year. A ton of writers are involved, including David Gerrold, who worked on the original TV series and penned the episode that brought us those lovable little fluffball aliens known as the Tribbles.
The 60th Anniversary comic is a 68-page anthology that hits shelves on September 2, according to
. The writers involved in the project include Miles Morales co-creator Brian Michael Bendis, Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan, Squirrel Girl and Lost in Random writer Ryan North, and comedian and writer Dana Gould.
But the most interesting person involved with the massive comic is David Gerrold, who is one of the last surviving Star Trek original series writers. His story will involve the famous Star Trek con man, Harry Mudd.
“The reason why Star Trek has been an enduring part of our culture is that at its heart, Star Trek has never been about finding enemies to defeat; it was always about finding allies and friends against the vast darkness of the universe,” Gerrold told the outlet. Gerrold helped write three different TOS episodes, including the famous “The Trouble with Tribbles.”
“I was privileged to be a part of that original vision. It was an amazing opportunity, and I made some of the best friends anyone could ever imagine. The chance to return to the Star Trek universe and write a new story, especially one that honors the original series, yes, it was a privilege.”
Elsewhere in the massive special is a one-page Enterprise gag story, a Scotty tale from Gould, a Next Generation -era story about Beverly Crusher, a Starfleet Academy tie-in story, and a small tease of the new Star Trek c omic coming from IDW in the future.
